Student teaching experience reflective essay introduction
Let’s begin with a claim: learning & teaching without reflecting on how, what, and why we are learning & teaching is meaningless. In WRD, we believe that a course portfolio and reflective essay is the best platform — like a dot-connecting mechanism — for supporting your reflections.

The fundamental challenges of the teaching profession are also well-articulated in Connecticut's , which includes "six domains and 46 indicators that identify the foundational skills and competencies that pertain to all teachers, regardless of the subject matter, field or age group they teach" (p. 2). They are useful for teacher preparation programs, beginning teachers, and experienced teachers. The first writing class I had to attend in college was all about writing different types of essay. The teacher would group us into four or five. We would read each other’s essay and give comments afterwards. I was confident with my first essay but the people in my group are great critics. My confidence started to melt like an ice cream in a summer day. However, the grades given by our teacher for those essays saved some of the ice cream. I, nonetheless, enjoyed most days in that writing class except the part where I have to sit with the group. Goal #2: Teach Them to Write Analytical Essays. Though this goal stemmed from appreciation of my own good fortune in middle school, it was strengthened in my Introduction to Education course at Swarthmore. It was there that I was first given the opportunity to consider—of all the things in the world—what I would most want to teach a classroom of students. As the too-oft-repeated proverb goes, “If you give a man a fish, he is fed for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he is fed for a lifetime.” I decided to plan my culminating curriculum project around the construction of the analytical essay, so that my imaginary pupils would not find themselves “out at sea,” if you will, upon receiving their first writing assignment at college. I wanted to arm them with the writing knowledge necessary to succeed later in life.

Though I have not accomplished all of my goals to the extent I had wished, all of them played a significant part in my teaching. I strove not to assume things about my students, to teach them to write analytical essays, to avoid asserting my power needlessly, to win their trust as a reasonable and considerate person, to make my content relevant, to give each student what they needed to succeed, and to develop cohesive unit plans. After reflecting on these goals over the course of my semester student teaching, I feel certain I will come even closer to achieving them the next time I have the opportunity to teach.
